Chapter 15
As she stood fumbling with her car keys, the men came out of the coffee shop.
Fred swaggered over to his electric car. Of course. Brynn slipped into her car and watched as Fred and his friend got situated. A sudden shot of curiosity traveled through her. Where were they staying? They were obviously not local.
She started her engine and waited for them to pull out of the parking lot. They turned right. Of course. They were heading for town.
She turned right and followed them. Her phone alerted her to a text message, which she ignored as she continued to follow them as they wound around the twisty road, past the community center, across the river, and then back around toward the bed-and-breakfast. If she had to place a bet, thatâs where they were staying.
She was right. They pulled off toward the B & B and she kept driving forward. They were none the wiser; she was certain.
When she got home, sheâd give Lottie, the owner of the B & B a call and then sheâd call Mike. Maybe the conversation she overheard was important to the case of the missing koi. If they werenât such expensive fish, and Sally wasnât so litigious, the situation could be funny. Of course, stealing was never funny. But who knew fish could cause so much trouble?
As she pulled off the road to turn her car around and head back to the farm, the mobile phone rang. She put the car in park. âHello?â
âTell me itâs not true!â
âSchuyler?â
âYouâre not really dating Mike, are you?â
Brynn gripped the steering wheel. âNo.â
âI heard youâre going to the police ball with him?â
âYes,â Brynn said. âHe asked, and I thought it could be fun.â
Silence on the other end of the phone.
âSchuyler?â
âYou know thatâs a date, right?â
Butterflies swam in her stomachâor maybe it was fish. âI suppose it is, butââ
âLook, I know I pick on him. But Mikeâs a great guy and youâre my best friend. It could get weird. Donât you think so?â
Brynn didnât know what to say. Was the Schuyler worried about her? About Mike? Both?
âWhat happens if you two have a nasty breakup?â She continued.
âWait,â Brynn said. âItâs just a date. One date. We are not, like, dating. Letâs just calm down.â
Schuyler cleared her throat. âMike is not like that. I think if he asks you out, he must have been thinking about it for a while.â
A car drove by as Brynn sat along the side of the road with her phone to her ear. The revelation about Mike made her heart flutter, but it also left her wonderingâwhat should she do next? âOkay,â she said. âMaybe we could talk about this later. Iâm sitting in my car, along the side of the road.â
âAre you okay?â Schuylerâs tone changed.
âYes, I was just following someone.â It came out of her mouth before she knew it.
âCome again?â
She explained the situation to Schuyler, who exploded into laughter. âThatâs why I love you. Only Brynn would do such a thing.â
âNow I have to let Mike know, donât I?â
Schuyler laughed again.
