Chapter 15

As she stood fumbling with her car keys, the men came out of the coffee shop.

Fred swaggered over to his electric car. Of course. Brynn slipped into her car and watched as Fred and his friend got situated. A sudden shot of curiosity traveled through her. Where were they staying? They were obviously not local.

She started her engine and waited for them to pull out of the parking lot. They turned right. Of course. They were heading for town.

She turned right and followed them. Her phone alerted her to a text message, which she ignored as she continued to follow them as they wound around the twisty road, past the community center, across the river, and then back around toward the bed-and-breakfast. If she had to place a bet, that’s where they were staying.

She was right. They pulled off toward the B & B and she kept driving forward. They were none the wiser; she was certain.

When she got home, she’d give Lottie, the owner of the B & B a call and then she’d call Mike. Maybe the conversation she overheard was important to the case of the missing koi. If they weren’t such expensive fish, and Sally wasn’t so litigious, the situation could be funny. Of course, stealing was never funny. But who knew fish could cause so much trouble?

As she pulled off the road to turn her car around and head back to the farm, the mobile phone rang. She put the car in park. “Hello?”

“Tell me it’s not true!”

“Schuyler?”

“You’re not really dating Mike, are you?”

Brynn gripped the steering wheel. “No.”

“I heard you’re going to the police ball with him?”

“Yes,” Brynn said. “He asked, and I thought it could be fun.”

Silence on the other end of the phone.

“Schuyler?”

“You know that’s a date, right?”

Butterflies swam in her stomach—or maybe it was fish. “I suppose it is, but—”

“Look, I know I pick on him. But Mike’s a great guy and you’re my best friend. It could get weird. Don’t you think so?”

Brynn didn’t know what to say. Was the Schuyler worried about her? About Mike? Both?

“What happens if you two have a nasty breakup?” She continued.

“Wait,” Brynn said. “It’s just a date. One date. We are not, like, dating. Let’s just calm down.”

Schuyler cleared her throat. “Mike is not like that. I think if he asks you out, he must have been thinking about it for a while.”

A car drove by as Brynn sat along the side of the road with her phone to her ear. The revelation about Mike made her heart flutter, but it also left her wondering—what should she do next? “Okay,” she said. “Maybe we could talk about this later. I’m sitting in my car, along the side of the road.”

“Are you okay?” Schuyler’s tone changed.

“Yes, I was just following someone.” It came out of her mouth before she knew it.

“Come again?”

She explained the situation to Schuyler, who exploded into laughter. “That’s why I love you. Only Brynn would do such a thing.”

“Now I have to let Mike know, don’t I?”

Schuyler laughed again.
