«CHAPTER TEN»

Liz sat at the table with her grandmother the next morning sipping her coffee. She was taking it strong and straight as she felt sluggish and sore from yesterday at the boutique. “So he says the walls in here will need to be stripped down in order to replace the wiring and plumbing in here as well,” Liz explained. She had been trying to elicit a response from her grandmother for the last twenty minutes, but Sissy just sat, sipping her coffee and filling in her crossword. “I know it’s not what we originally planned, but it’s necessary, and Grandfather would want me to see this through.” There, that caused at least a small glance up from her paper, Liz thought.

“Lizzy, your grandfather would be appalled at the state of this house right now.” Sissy nudged her glasses back up her nose and went back to the crossword.

“Grandfather asked me to remodel the house. For you. And me. But he wanted you to have a safe and beautiful home to live in. He was upset he wasn’t able to get started on it himself.”

“I do not want to talk about your grandfather.” Sissy’s forced tone told Liz the conversation was over. But she couldn’t help herself.

“Well, I told Jackson to move forward with the plans. He starts down here today. Mitzy said we could use her kitchen while this one is being updated. Jackson said he will make this his top priority so that we can move back into this one as soon as possible.” She stood and walked back to the coffee pot. It was a two-cup kind of morning. She looked outside as several vehicles pulled into the drive. “There they are now.” She reached into the cabinet and pulled out one of her travel mugs and filled it for Jackson. “I’ll be back in a few.”

She met him at the edge of the patio as he and several of his workmen pow-wowed over the day’s tasks. She enjoyed watching him work: confident, knowledgeable, respected. He was kind, but tough, and she realized that that is why his men worked so well for him. Bill gave her a warm smile as he passed and she walked towards Jackson. “Good morning.” He glanced up from his clipboard. She offered him the travel mug.

“If that is coffee, you have saved my life this morning. And quite possibly the lives of my men.”

“Busy morning?” she asked.

“You could say that. Thanks for this.” He took a long swig and Liz cringed, knowing it had to have burned his tongue, but Jackson never flinched. “Cute.” He held up the pink travel mug and she smiled. “I didn’t think of the color. Sorry.”

“I’m not complaining.” He grinned. “So were you able to talk to your grandmother about the kitchen?”

Liz grimaced.

“That bad, huh?”

“Yes. Though I told her we were doing it anyway.”

“Look at you, Little Miss Boss.”

She laughed. “Hardly. I was wondering though, that while you are in the kitchen, could you move out the dinette table? It’s super old, and I thought it might be special to buy Grandmother a new one.
