Yellowstone Country

It is true that most of Yellowstone National Park lies in Wyoming, but that’s certainly not to say that the Cowboy State has a monopoly on the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem’s stunning scenery. In fact, many would argue that even though Wyoming’s Yellowstone claims the world-famous geysers and other thermal phenomena, the really stupendous country lies to the north of the park in the Big Sky State.

You’ll begin touring Yellowstone Country in the headwaters region, where three rivers merge to become the Missouri, then press on to Bozeman. From the home of Montana State University, you’ll go up the Gallatin River, passing the Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort en route to West Yellowstone. From there, you’ll pass into Wyoming and through the northwest corner of the world’s first national park, then drop back into Montana along the Gardiner and Yellowstone Rivers. You’ll then traverse the spectacular Paradise Valley to Livingston, a fun town filled with cowboys and fly fishers, before continuing on to Big Timber and Red Lodge, where a side trip leads along the world-renowned Beartooth National Scenic Byway. Finally, on your way to Custer–Missouri River Country, you can venture onto outback roads to visit the remote Pryor Mountain National Wild Horse Range.
