Chapter thirteen

Skookum

As the weeks passed by, the tests became more and more frequent. The written essays were nearly enough to drive Wren insane. Her trap did successfully catch pixies but the materials that Yazi picked were too weak to hold them in for long so they were only given partial points, and the hunts themselves were few and far between. The moments that Wren and Lindi could spend together privately were just the same.

They made a point of having a secret meal together every Saturday and it never failed to surprise and delight. Lindi was a great hostess. Sometimes they simply had bowls of taloo berries, which glisten with an iridescent glow and burst with a delightful sweetness were always paired with cheeses filled up with nuts and salty, crunchy chunks of bracken brittle. Another night, they found themselves feasting on pastries that had been stuffed with a sweet and savory meat pate, drenched in a garlic-butter sauce, and served with a side of solidified stenin syrup, which was the perfect counter.

Now, Wren’s family weren’t slouches. They had their fair share of money—enough that her father had been able to pass her onto a nanny for the better part of Wren’s early years. But they also weren’t much for hosting parties and didn’t live in the same ethereal world of extravagance that the Calhoones clearly did.

So when Wren realized that they would have a Saturday date night back-to-back with a hunt on Sunday, it seemed like the perfect combination of both her current interests and loves. The date night itself went off without a hitch and the next morning, they were all gathered up by Professor Deluge and brought out to the patch of coarse, yellowed grass at the side of the old field. The air was undeniably colder today, which might have been part of why they were doing this while the sun was still out. The students had all pulled on their long-sleeved blouses and a few of them had even opted for the peacoats that they had been issued.

Wren didn’t mind the cold. She had her long sleeves rolled up slightly; if it weren’t for the fact that she had no clue where the test was going to take place at, she wouldn’t have bothered to wear them.

Professor Deluge explained, “We will be using the same squads as before. As you can see, all of the members of your year are here today. This is because we are going to a larger terrain, where there will be a more limited amount of monsters to hunt. The name of today’s hunt is speed and efficiency.”

Amaya asked, “What are we hunting?”

“Skookum crows,” said Professor Deluge. “At the start of our year together, I advised that you read ahead in your book. If you’ve done that, you’ll know precisely what I’m talking about.”

His eyes scanned the crowd. Lindi’s hand shot up into the air.

Professor Deluge pointed at her.

Lindi cleared her throat and then announced, “Skookum crows—if this half-spirit animal enters a person they get a seemingly random illness.
