I made sure to push the broom underwater after each top section I cleaned. Halfway through the slick, I had to paddle back to shore, ring the oil out of the broom, and head back out. The broom was absorbent enough to finish the cleanup without needing to another ringing-out. To be on the safe side, however, I returned with it once more and double-tested the water to make sure there wasn’t any oil under the surface.

After I was certain I’d gotten it all, I kayaked over every inch of the lake, testing and checking for any more oil. I found none, thank goodness. When I was certain I had the lake cleaned, I finally paddled back to shore one last time.

There was one more test to do, but that would require Isla and Nerine, and they weren’t back from hiking yet. They could tell me if there was any contamination anywhere else in the water.

When I reached the shore, I dragged the kayak up onto the small beach area and took the sorbent broom to the bucket I’d been storing the recovered oil. I rang it out one

last time, but nothing came out, which meant there hadn’t been anything in the lake to absorb. I hauled the bucket and broom back to the barn to stash out of sight of the kids. I thought about whether I should inform the parents about the oil but had decided against it. I would make certain the lake was safe by having the girls test it well before any kids were to enter the water. The little bit of oil, only about four gallons, that had been in the lake was now safely removed.

As soon as I got a clean bill of health from Isla and Nerine, everything would be back to normal. I really didn’t see any reason to call yet another meeting with the parents where I’d simply end up explaining the science behind a sorbent broom.

When the bucket, oil, and broom were su ciently hidden, I returned for my kayak. I had just gotten back to the barn and hung up when I heard the kids returning. I smiled just a little. The sound of exhausted children compared to how they sounded when they first strike out on a new adventure was always so di erent. When they were exhausted but still excited, it was a little comical to hear how they tried to communicate with the energy they didn’t have. Walking out of the barn, I joined them. They immediately bombarded with tales of forest treasures they’d discovered and near-misses they’d had. Each story was more dramatic than the last, and soon, I was lost in fueling their excitement for nature over dinner.

It wasn’t until after the kids were tucked away in their bunkhouses that I had Isla and Nerine test the lake. They gave it a clean bill of health, which lifted a sizable amount of stress o my shoulders, and I could go to sleep without the worry of my campers swimming in contaminated water.
