Chapter 10

“Why did Doctor Lyfe run away?” Mei asked as we hiked through an unidentified forest in North Carolina. “When you two fought each other in those games on the television, you always said you ‘never back down.’”

“Because he’s a coward, that’s why,” Ray said before he tossed his arm around my shoulder. “He realized we were gonna kick his ass next, so he cut and run before we had a chance.”

“And he sacrificed one of his mutants,” I said. “That’s the part that surprises me most of all. Like, I know Lyfe is just a selfish asshole, but I figured he’d want to protect one of his successful experiments at all costs.”

“Who says it was a successful experiment, dude?” Ray asked. “He didn’t seem anything like Mei or me. One of the dudes I worked with, let’s call him Ol’ Joe, once told me he thought Lyfetech was trying to create an actual security force from the ground up that would only be loyal to the company and nobody else. But not just by like, paying them well or anything. Noooooo. They wanted people that could be mind controlled.”

“Are you kidding me?” I asked. “He was a huge, superhuman soldier that could go toe to toe with you, Ray. I’d say that was pretty successful.”

“Nah, man,” Ray drawled. “He wasn’t anything close to the perfect soldier. He still seemed to have his own personality and free will, which isn’t what they’re going-- Oh, shit! I bet they started the experiments on humans, but it only made them stronger or something. Which is why they’re experimenting on animals! They’re way more innocent, loyal, and they’re less intelligent than a human, so they’re easier to like, program or something. No offense, Mei.”

“I do not understand most of the words you just said,” the orange-haired beauty chuckled. “So I am not offended.”

“Now that you mention it, the other soldiers seemed a bit ‘off’, too,” I said. “I know Lyfetech is filthy rich and can afford bodyguards, but those dudes were giving me some major Agent Smith, hivemind sort of vibes.”

“Mind control, bro,” Ray replied.

“Mind control?” I raised an eyebrow before I wiped a bit of sweat from my brow. “You’re kidding, right?”

“Dude, I don’t kid around about stuff like this,” Ray said. “Are you really doubting that it might be true? In the last two days you’ve literally seen your housecat turned into a sexy cat-person and your best friend turned into… whatever the fuck I am now, by an experimental serum. I’d think you’d believe anything at this point.”

“That’s fair,” I chuckled. “But still, mind control? At least the serum has some sort of scientific basis to it. Mind control is starting to verge into magic territory.”

“No way, man.” Ray shook his head. “They’ve been experimenting with mind control for years now. Brain chip implants, hypnosis, radio frequencies… It’s totally realistic nowadays. And if anybody’s gonna figure out mind control, I’d put my money on Lyfetech.”

“Maybe they are machines?” Mei said. “Like those little things that you drive around the house, and I absolutely love to chase.
