Once the Petalbearer was dead, the enemy broke. I was somewhat sure the tide of them from the walls had already ceased, but they turned tail and ran, most of them cut down as they did.

I did my fair share of eliminating fleeing enemies. It didn’t feel great, but they’d have done it to me in a second. Also, most of them were zombies or plant monsters, so the morals of the situation weren’t that bad.

The whole thing had barely even been a battle. It was a slaughter. In our favor, though.

After the remnants were mopped up, we met in the middle of a sea of corpses and torn vines.

“Is that it?” Viluna asked. She looked down at her stained gauntlets and added, “It was real nice ripping out a Petalbearer’s petals, but…I dunno. Just one, huh? I was hoping we’d see a few more.”

“Did everyone make it out?” I asked.

Xera nodded. “The fighting didn’t even get close to the civilians. And we barely took any losses as well. Some, a few injuries, but mostly…we destroyed them.”

“We did, didn’t we?” I said. “But is anyone else getting the feeling that it was too easy?”

Sarin nodded, looking up into the gloom. “Perhaps. But perhaps we’re stronger now than the Queen assumed. I’m sure the real goal was to inflict whatever damage she could while her roots wound around the collector.” She raised her sword and swung it in a slow arc, sending out multitudes of primal light that, once they had flown towards the wall, revealed just that: the arms of the collector were being quickly engulfed by grasping roots. “Still, I doubt she expected us to trounce her forces so swiftly. I believe her real goal was to activate the collector while we were all still here, which would have…well, I don’t know what the consequences would be. Bad, at any rate, with all the magic flowing in.”

“So she’s really trying to be the goddess of all magic, or what?”

“It’s the only real answer, I think.”

“Is that possible?” I asked.

Sarin just shrugged, and it was still so weird to see actual emotions on her face. She was also fidgeting quite a bit, probably nearing the end of being comfortable in her new body for the moment. “I couldn’t say. Ascending without an affinity is, as demonstrated by Rek’Torga, impossible. But could you do it if you’d already ascended once? Who knows? At any rate, it will take her a long, long time to do so. Years, possibly decades, unless she builds more collectors.”

“What if she uses all of the deadgod’s collectors at once?”

“Ah…right. The thing I should have immediately thought of.” Sarin said, her eyes widening a little. “Well…still… it would take a while. We’ll have killed her by then.”

“Damn right,” Viluna said. “But, we’re gonna kill the King first, aren’t we?” she added with a curled lip.

“It’s the best plan.”

“I guess.”

Since we had a little time, it appeared, a few of the Golreq came back through the portals to take more from the little village.
