Chapter Thirty-Six

Paul stepped out of the Jeep and approached a very nervous-looking young soldier who was standing near the bodies with his weapon drawn. “Stand down, soldier,” he said.

“Who are you?” the young man asked.

“Paul Renfro,” he said. “I’m in charge of this operation.”

“What happened to these men, Sir?”

Paul certainly wasn’t going to tell this soldier anything about the Warriors. Too many people knew already and the old joke about having to kill him if he told him actually applied in this case. In his mind, he’d been working on a story to tell anyone who ran into a Warrior kill. He decided to try it out on this soldier. “The chemical that was spilled up the road, well, there was a den of coyotes that was exposed and we’re guessing that the pack ingested some which seems to have driven them crazy, and we believe that they’ve been attacking people and other animals in the area.”

“Coyotes did this?” the soldier asked, pointing to the man that he had turned over once he’d discovered him.

“That’s right,” Paul confirmed.

“I’ve never heard of…,” the soldier said.

“Sir?” one of Paul’s companions said as he nodded up the street.

Paul turned his attention to the road. About a half mile or so away a truck was heading in their direction. “Damn,” he said. He then turned to the nervous soldier with the gun. “Go turn that truck around before it gets too close. And holster that weapon. We don’t want to scare the locals.” Then, under his breath, “Or make them suspicious.”

“What if the coyotes come back?” The soldier asked.

“Just go!” Paul yelled.

The soldier shoved his handgun into its holster and then ran up the road, his arms waving back and forth.

Paul then turned to his assistant. “Cover these bodies. There are tarps in the back of our Jeep.” Before the man could get to the vehicle though, he and Paul both heard the truck accelerate.

“What the…?” the assistant said.

“Damn,” Paul repeated under his breath as he saw the truck heading straight for them.

Margie Hinkle saw the commotion at the end of the road where it intersected with the 93 highway. There appeared to be three military Jeeps and several men standing beside them. There also appeared to be something in the road. She thought it was an animal. Maybe one of the Jeeps struck a cow?

When she saw the soldier running toward her with his arms waving, she thought he must be wanting to warn her of the accident ahead. When he stopped right in the middle of the road it became clear that he wanted her to stop as well.

“What’s going on?” she asked when she was right beside him with her window down.

“You need to turn around, ma’am,” he told her. “You need to go back home and stay there until you get the all-clear.”

“That’s what I’m trying to do,” she said. “But I live on the other side of town and that’s where I’m going.”

“That’s not possible, ma’am,” the soldier said.
