Chapter Ten

“So, you’re really just going to leave me here?” He trotted up behind her.

“Thought you were going to phone a friend.” She looked back over her shoulder. She was smiling, relaxed.

“I was. But I’m thinking through some other options now.” He caught up to her. His head said bad idea. Get yourself home without her help. Some other part of him followed her like a lost puppy.

“Ah.” She placed a finger on her cheek. “Such as?”

“Taking you up on your offer to help. I don’t know anything about cars.”

“Really?” She laughed. “I thought in the army you could assemble bombs out of detergent and make keys from paper clips and stuff like that?”

“Yeah, well, I’m the flight surgeon. I know the insides of people. Not the insides of cars.”

She stared at him with a doubting expression.

“Okay. Never mind. I’ll go back and wiggle some of the wires.”

“You really don’t know how to fix it, do you?”

“Uh…no. And sometimes once she cuts off, she doesn’t start again for days.”

“Hmm. I don’t think Aggie will put up with you being on her lawn for days. Perhaps I should send Mr. Jimenez out to you.”

“And who is Mr. Jimenez?”

“The gardener. But he knows about engines, too. I’m sure he’d look at it if we asked him to.” She stopped. “But for my help, I get to ask you for a favor.”

“A favor? Do I get to know what the favor is?” Justin stopped, scratched his head, his heart pounding a little faster. Was she going to ask him for the truth about Tommy? He hoped not.

She pretended to think about it. “No.”

“So, I’m agreeing blindly?”

“Yes.” She smiled.

“You’re enjoying this.” He pointed at her.

“I am.” She nodded. “So, what will it be? Favor for favor? Or I walk back to the house and you wiggle wires?”

“Favor.”

“Then let’s get your car fixed.”

Justin followed Becky to the garden shed, wondering two things. One, what he’d just promised to do for her. And two, how much trouble it would cause him and his heart that he was falling head over heels for one Mrs. Tommy Kirkpatrick.
