Charles felt the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Even if he ran as fast as he could, he would not be able to catch up to the Bean. How deep was the water in that silvery pond? Maybe it was just a few feet deep, but the Bean was only a few feet tall. Even a shallow pond was too deep for someone who could not swim.
Molly gave one loud bark and charged forward, pulling the leash right out of Charles’s hand.
“Mom!” Charles turned to see if his mother was getting closer. She was flying down the hill, but she was still even farther away from the Bean than he was.
He turned back, expecting to see the Bean land in the water with a splash. Instead, he saw Molly — wonderful, amazing Molly! — barreling down the hill like a speedy little locomotive, until the last minute when she leapt like an Olympic high jumper, right over the Bean’s rolling body. Then she planted herself, solid as a rock, between him and the water. Smack! The Bean rolled into the black-and-brown pup — and stopped.

“And then the Bean looked up at Molly and laughed. Just laughed and laughed, because he didn’t even know that she might have just saved his life,” Charles said at morning meeting the next day at school. Charles had bounced up and down waving his hand until Mr. Mason called on him to share. He could hardly wait to tell how Molly had saved the Bean from rolling into the pond. He could see it now, the way she had raced through the grass, her powerful legs driving her strong, sturdy body down the hill. She had run so fast! Faster than Charles would have ever thought she could go. In seconds she had caught up with the Bean.
Charles remembered how the ducks had flapped their wings and squawked, and how Mom had swooped down the hill to grab up the Bean in her arms, and how Jesy had talked on and on about what a hero Molly was.
“Wow,” Charles’s friend David said now. “Did you tell Molly she was a good girl?”
Charles nodded. “I hugged her and patted her and told her over and over. Man!” He shook his head. “I never saw a dog do something like that before.”
Mr. Mason smiled. “That’s a wonderful story, Charles. Thanks for sharing it. Molly must be a very special dog.” He checked his watch. “We need to move on to some math practice, but we’ll have some time after lunch today if you and Nicky are ready to give your report about Rottweilers.”
Charles looked at Nicky. “I guess we’re almost ready,” he said.
“You can use the computer at recess time if that will help,” said Mr. Mason.
And that was how Charles and Nicky ended up staying inside at recess, downloading pictures of dogs, instead of playing four-square outside on the playground. It was worth it, to have the report done. By the time the rest of their class came back in, they were ready.
