At least Adi hadn’t realized that Gran could be in danger too. If her fire station had been one of the first to respond, she could be in the towers right now.

Our grandmother was strong and tough and smart, but she was getting older. I knew Dad and Papa had been urging her to retire.

I imagined Gran searching for the injured. Struggling to scale the stairways of the World Trade Center. Surrounded by smoke.

My chest ached and I forced a deep breath. I couldn’t afford to panic right now. We had to get out of here first.

Papa and Gran have to be okay, I told myself.

But the pit in my stomach told me that might not be true.

Just then the radio cut back in: “Airplanes are being rerouted. All flights are grounded. We have no idea how many other jets could be hijacked.”
