It was almost comical the next day to see everyone sitting together at the bakery as if they were all friends again, or perhaps actors playing parts in the same play.

It was like nothing had happened and everyone was enjoying a friendly cup of coffee amongst dear friends. Ned was back to looking, and acting, like himself. Linda seemed much less mad at him than she had before. Both of my parents seemed to be somewhat tolerating each other, although they were on opposite ends of tables so as not to take their chances on getting under each other’s skin too much.

Chet was dressed in his normal tight, dark attire, but his white-blonde hair was flowing freely around him instead of in the usual braids. It was strange to see him without braids and it gave him an almost ethereal appearance which definitely didn’t match his more malevolent personality.

When Orin and I walked in through the door together, everyone looked up and smiled. Well, except for Chet. He didn’t smile, but he did have a look of contentment at seeing that his balancing half was back up and on his feet again. As everyone greeted Orin warmly and asked about how he was feeling, Persephone came and pulled me to the side.

“I’m glad to see that your lover is feeling better,” she smiled at me.

I tried to keep my voice down so that the others wouldn’t hear this conversation and start getting strange ideas about my relationship with Orin.

“He’s not my lover,” I said, even though I wished that he was. “We haven’t even slept together. I haven’t slept with either of them.”

Persephone gave me a knowing smile, the kind of smile that only comes from a mother when she knows something more about her daughter than the daughter knows about herself.

“There is more to being a lover than the act of sex,” she said. “Trust me. I can see it in his eyes, mages don’t hide these things well. He is your lover.” She looked over at Orin, who happened to be glancing back toward me at that exact moment. “I’m glad,” she said as she turned back around to face me. “I’ve always favored him.”

We sat down together at one of the small tables near the window under the low hanging vines of Linda’s plants, which seemed to be growing at an even more rapid pace these days.

“I want to talk with you,” Persephone said. “About your sister, and about you.”

“I have to admit that this is all really strange to me,” I replied. “The parents I thought were my parents were actually nothing more than hosts for a portion of my life. Then you and Brayeden show up and I find out that my mother is a cat who looks younger than me in Fae form, and my father is an absentee druid. I’m sure you can understand why all of it, including the notion of having a sister that died hundreds of years ago, is a bit much to handle.
