The idea for this story came from one of our readers. I thought it was a wonderful idea to involve Connor and Lilly in one of the mysteries, and here it is. Smudge and I thank you for the suggestion, and for being such great fans!

Kids will be kids

I have to admit, I’m not your usual cat. Oh, I run after mice with the best of them and I meow at all the right times and I purr whenever anyone gives me a good belly rub. But this black and white tomcat knows a few things that most other cats don’t.

Take children, for instance.

Are they just smaller versions of adults? I don’t think so. They play a lot more. Do dangerous things more often. Risk getting in trouble just to have some fun.

Almost like cats.

Only, from a cat’s point of view, kids can be really annoying, too. Like Connor here. Good kid, usually. He’s the son of Ellen Meyers, the friend of Darcy’s and Jon’s that we have living here with us in our house. Connor knows where to scratch behind my ears, but then he starts scratching my back or trying to catch my paws in his hands.

See? Annoying.

The kid is kind of cute, I guess. All short and lanky with light blonde hair that sticks up everywhere. He’s starting to get some freckles in the summer sun. If I were a human, I’d consider adopting him.

I don’t mind hanging out with him, sometimes, but I do enjoy my quiet time away from him and the other people in our house. A cat’s work is never done, and it’s nice to just relax in the grass sometimes.

Which was what I was doing, in front of our big house, under the shade of a big tree, trying to dream big dreams. Until Connor came and sat down under the same tree with Lilly from next door.

Lilly is cute too, I guess, if I’m being honest. She’s got this kind of angel’s face with long brown hair that she just started putting in pigtails. Today she’s in a green t-shirt and jeans that look a lot like Connor’s. She goes back and forth between dresses and jeans.

When these two get together, the day is never quiet.

So much for my nap.

They haven’t noticed me yet and that suits me just fine. They’re talking about what to do today, where to go, who wants to do what. As near as I can figure, summer days for kids are a lot like every day for cats. Do what you want, make your own schedule, and just enjoy life.

A lot like cats.

I’m half asleep when I hear Connor ask a question. “Hey. What’s this?”

Laying on my side, I have to pick my head up to see what he’s talking about. If I’m not going to get my nap I might as well satisfy my curiosity.

That whole thing about curiosity and cats? Don’t believe it.

He’s holding a rock. Must have found it in the dirt here under the tree.
