A photograph made for a vintage postcard in the late 1930s reveals the grandest of all California missions, Mission San Luis de Rey de Francia. The rededication of Mission San Luis Rey de Francia came in 1893, and refugees of the Franciscan Zacatecas Order from Mexico fleeing political hardships had moved there. After 1912, Fr. Peter Wallischeck carried out many restorations to bring the mission back to the improved condition seen today. (Author’s collection.)

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia had been returned to the church from Mexican secularization to avoid further plundering of the property in 1843 by Gov. Manuel Micheltorena. Pres. Abraham Lincoln emancipated the church by returning many of the California missions’ title patents back to church ownership in 1865 in a proclamation just weeks before his assassination.
