Software and the Indian Success Story

The IT industry has been playing a major part in India in the last few years. The successes of the software business in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai are indicative of what India as a whole can achieve by moving to new methods of manufacturing and utilizing the latest technology.

India must not only to derive benefits from the present software boom and demand, but also to prepare itself for the higher end of the market. India should dream of becoming a software leader in a decade.

When we talk about the software industry, what exactly do we mean? Well, software can comprise many different things:

Packaged applications , which everyone can use on their own computers, such as games or a drawing programme.

Operating systems for both stand-alone computers, such as the one you have at home, and networked systems, as in an office.

Software as a service , which means management tools for large networks of computers.

Enterprise software that enables efficient management of large corporations’ production, sales and information systems.

Software applications and operating systems for mainframe and individual computers.

Customized software for specific industry management.

‘Packaged’ software is written for mass distribution, not for the specific needs of a particular user, and may be distributed in any format—electronic download, in a disk or CD, or through a web-based service. Broad categories of packaged applications include operating systems, such as MS Office, utilities, applications and programming languages.

India’s software exports have grown dramatically over the years. Indian software companies have been exporting to the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan, West Asia, south-east Asia, South Africa, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong and Latin America. At present, almost 68 per cent of total exports are to North America.
