Jess was in a world of her own when Emma spoke to her.
âHave you got a partner, Jess?â she asked.
âNo, Iâm in between arseholes at the moment, thank goodness.â She paused. âSorry, that was a bit harsh.â
Emma laughed. âUnlucky in love?â
âYou could say that.â
âAt least you donât have to listen to someone snoring next to you all night.â Emma rolled her eyes. âMy fella, Josh, sounds like the London Underground at times when I stay over. I swear there might be a murder soon.â She coloured. âOh, that was in bad taste, Iâm sorry now!â
âNo worries.â Jess smiled to show she understood it was a joke.
âYou donât have any hobbies or things we need to be worried about, Jess?â Connor joined in. âLike turning into a vampire after dark?â
âIâll let you know once dusk sets in,â Jess toyed with him. âJust be sure not to show me your neck.â
âWell, that rules you out then.â Nathan twanged an elastic band at Connor, narrowly missing his nose. âWhoâd want to bite your skin when you only wash once in a blue moon?â
âCheeky git. Iâll have you know itâs at least once a week.â He sniffed his armpits. âMind, in this heat, itâs more like twice a day.â
Emma got out some body spray and squirted it around the room liberally, much to the menâs dismay.
âIt smells like a flower shop,â Nathan protested as Connor feigned a coughing fit.
Jess was watching Marsha in her office. The blinds were open so, from where she was sitting, she could see straight in. Marsha and Finn laughed at something sheâd said, then their heads went down to look at a file. A bit of grimacing, and then more laughter.
A few minutes passed, and they were still talking. Before the next briefing, she needed a trip to the ladies. Sidling past Emma, she leaned in conspiratorially.
âCan I ask you something?â
âSure.â
âMarsha and Finn. They seem a bit⦠friendly,â she whispered.
Emma nodded. âThey get on really well. Itâs a shame Marsha is happily married, because I think theyâd make a great couple. And itâs clear to everyone that Finn only has eyes for Miss Marsha.â
âOh?â Jess was intrigued.
Marshaâs door opened, and she and Finn reappeared.
Jess shot out of the room, as if she were a child being caught doing something naughty. When she came back, Finn had gone and Marsha was perched on the end of the spare desk, waiting for her to return.
âCatch-up time. Iâll start with the forensic results.â Marsha held up the file and went through everything sheâd discussed with Finn. âSo, where do we go from here?â
