CHAPTER 15

Snow awoke with the feeling he was being watched. He opened his eyes and saw Tracy staring at him, her head resting on the other pillow. Clearly this was not the bed in his motel room. This one was much nicer.

“What are you looking at?” he asked her.

“I was watching you sleep,” she said. “You look so innocent.”

“Looks can be deceiving,” Snow said. “I thought you said you don’t sleep with anyone on the first date.”

“I don’t,” she said. “This was the first time in my entire life I’ve ever done this on a first date. You know what that means, don’t you?”

“What does it mean?”

“I must have been really drunk last night.” She grinned.

“You didn’t show it.”

“You did. You drank three-quarters of that bottle of champagne by yourself along with everything else.”

“I didn’t want it to go to waste.”

“I thought you don’t like champagne.”

“I don’t like light beer either,” Snow said. “But I’ll drink it if it’s sitting in front of me.”

“What would you like to do today?” Tracy asked.

“Drive to Vegas and get married.”

“Now I know you’re joking.”

“If it doesn’t work out, we can get a quick divorce, and I’ll be a three-time loser.”

“It would work out,” she said, smiling.

“Don’t be so sure,” Snow said. “I’m nearing the tail end of my Mister Wonderful charade. I don’t have the stamina to keep it up much longer.”

She laughed. “Then, I guess I’ll have to pay for breakfast. Where would you like to eat?”

“The Main Street Café,” Snow said. “I want some more of that bacon. But I don’t think they have bagels there for you, unless they’re served stuffed with eggs and bacon.”

“I don’t always eat bagels for breakfast,” she said.

“What else do you eat?”

“Bacon and eggs,” she replied.
