That afternoon, Captain Singleton called me into his office for a “talk.” The scowl on his face the last time he’d summoned me was gone, but he looked somber. “Caitlin, I know how much you hate giving up on a case, but it’s time to let the Miseau investigation go. Vince is still green and needs your help. Cases are piling up, and there’s no point in our investigating a suspicious death if we can’t figure out how it happened.”

“I have one last idea I really want to check out, Captain.” I explained about the possibility that something could have been absorbed in Lydia’s skin that couldn’t be detected in our toxicology tests. “Nothing showed up on her costumes, but I just submitted her makeup to Tony. If this doesn’t pan out, I promise to move on.”

He rubbed his chin. Finally, he said, “All right, but while you’re waiting for the results, I want you to work with Vince on his cases. He looks up to you, you know.”

“Nice to hear.” Truthfully, working with Vince always made me miss Stan even more. For one thing, fresh-faced Vince with his rash of freckles looked about twelve and made me feel ancient. For another thing, he never ventured an opinion until I’d offered mine.

“Have you heard anything from Stan?”

“Not directly, but his mother called me. Said he’s doing much better. Might even get out at the end of this week.”

“Wow. That was fast.” My pulse raced. The way my life was going, once released from treatment, Stan’s first official act would be to request a new partner.

“That’s why they call it short term treatment, O’Connor.”

“Right. Anything else, sir?”

“One last thing. When Stan gets out, if there are any signs of a relapse, I expect you to come to me immediately.”

“Of course.” What I didn’t say was I wasn’t sure Stan and I would still be partners.
