I got my second wind — or maybe it was my third — on the way over to the Talbots’. The taxi dropped me off a moment before the pizza-delivery guy pulled up. So I took the stack of boxes from him, crossing around the side path to the back door of the Craftsman.

My hair was still a little wet, but the pizza boxes were toasty warm.

The basement windows were all lit up, as were the windows of the kitchen and the living room, indicating that the senior Talbots were probably home. I would go up and say hello later. Stephan Talbot had recently rejoined the sorcerers League, so he was more than just my friends’ dad now. He was a potential work contact.

And apparently, I worked now. Like a real adult. Speaking of which, I needed to check my email for the requests Pearl had said she was going to forward. And I probably needed to email my mother. Though that was maybe taking the adulting a step too far.

A tall, shadowy figure was waiting for me in the dark hall just inside the back door. I squeaked unbecomingly when she lunged past the washer and dryer, arms outstretched. This display of bravery garnered me a throaty laugh, a harsh kiss on the cheek, and the loss of the pizza boxes.

“You’re seriously late!” Bitsy snarled, stalking off through the darkened laundry area toward Tony’s lair, which had been converted back into the recreation room for games night. Wearing wide-legged yoga pants and a long-sleeved tight T-shirt, Rebecca Talbot stood six feet tall in bare feet, though her wild halo of dark curls added about two inches to her height. Bitsy was a month shy of twenty-four, and halfway through her degree in sports medicine. Or at least into the second half of her degree, as best I understood it.

“I brought the pizza!” I cried out. But my protest fell on deaf ears as Bitsy disappeared through the well-lit doorway to the rec room. She — or rather, the pizza — was greeted from within by a chorus of exuberant cheering.

I tugged off my boots, adding them to the pile at the side of the exterior door, then followed the eldest Talbot sister down the hall. Unlike her adoptive parents and brothers, Bitsy wasn’t a sorcerer. She was a werewolf. And while Peggy and Gabby — though mostly Peggy — were somewhat open about their past, Bitsy was as close-mouthed as I tended to be. Still, I had gathered through the rumor mill — aka Benjamin Garrick — that her parents had been real assholes when her shapeshifting abilities hadn’t manifested at a young age. And then hadn’t manifested at all, at least not reliably.

Bitsy was training with Kandy now, though. Kandy was an enforcer for the West Coast North American Pack, as well as for the Godfrey coven — and therefore a total hard-ass.

I seriously wouldn’t want to be the one training with Kandy. Thankfully, my talents lay elsewhere.

Blinking against the abrupt change in lighting, I wandered into the rec room.
