Chapter 43

Amber

“As soon as I turn this corner up here, you need to bail. Run down the street and someone else will meet you there and get you back to your pack, alright? You’ll have about five seconds to get out of sight.”

“Any tips for jumping out of a moving car?” Amber asked as she scooted over to the passenger side door.

Velez gave her a charming smile. “Tuck and roll.”

“Wow. So helpful,” she muttered, eyeing the road warily. Forty miles an hour sounded slow until you had to launch yourself out of the vehicle.

“He’s trying to get you killed,” Kadrithan muttered.

She couldn’t wait until she got somewhere she could yell at him. He was being the opposite of helpful at the moment.

“Get ready. We get one shot to do this right.”

Crouching on the seat, she pulled on the door handle, ready to fling the door open as soon as they turned. Her heart raced with anticipation.

Velez accelerated toward the turn, taking it sharper than she expected. “Go!”

She surged out of the door before she could hesitate. The tuck and roll turned into more of a tumble and slide. Rough concrete scraped her elbow and knee as she bounced to a stop against the wall of the alley. Scrambling to her feet, she took off at a sprint. She had to get out of sight as quickly as possible.

A door swung open in her path and a large, hairy arm shot out, yanking her inside. The door slammed shut behind her. She stood panting in the small room, facing off with a tall man with light green skin and small tusks the jutted out from his lips.

“That was hilarious to watch,” the half-troll said with a grin. His voice was familiar. “You bounced a lot.”

The aches and bruises confirmed he was right.

“Yeah. I guess jumping out of cars gracefully takes practice.” Her nose twitched as she took in his scent. “You’re the one with the bear mask aren’t you?”

He nodded. “Yep.”

Kadrithan’s form blurred for a moment. “I have to go. I will let the others know where you are if I can.”

He vanished as another door behind them opened and Mira stepped out with a wide grin. “Fancy meeting you here.”

Amber nodded in greeting. “Thanks for getting me out of there. Orange is not my color.”

“Well, it was the right thing to do, so how could I not?” Mira said with a wink. “I’m sure you’re ready to find your pack as well. Come with me. There are a few things we need to do.”

She gave Bear a wave goodbye and followed Mira deeper into the building. Sheetrock lay in stacks around unfinished walls. It looked like the building would serve as offices when it was finished, but it was still under construction.

“Does the Kudzu own all of this?” she asked, looking around curiously.

“In a manner of speaking. Certain parties connected to the Kudzu have extensive real estate holdings. After all, every good rebellion needs funding.”

“Y’all have connections in all sorts of surprising places,” Amber said quietly, still in shock over Velez’s position with the SIA.
