Chapter Seven

During breakfast in the parlor, Andromeda and Taiyung were scolded by Zarek, Selah, Cassandra, and Caliban.

“Andromeda, I will allow that you are new to how we do things. But Tai, I expect much better from you.” Cassandra gave him the full effect of the parental disappointment look.

“Let this be an example,” Caliban directed to the children, “we will not tolerate sneaking around.”

Zoe’s face was pitying. Brat, Andy thought. It reminded her of… the times Andy would get into trouble and Zoe taking enjoyment from it because she wasn’t the one in trouble.

The reverse was true too. She’d grin wide when her mom and dad weren’t looking when it was Zoe who was at fault.

“Andromeda.”

“I’m not doing anything, Mom.” She batted her eyes several times.

Stormtide leaned in. “Your sister is already in trouble. Do you want to be in trouble too?”

“Please do not scold Tai too much. I would have been with him if I hadn’t been distracted,” Kayli interrupted.

“You do not need to defend me, Kayli,” her twin responded.

Kayli placed her fists on her hips. “If you get in trouble, I will be in trouble with you.”

Wow, Andy thought, So there are siblings who aren’t bratty to each other.

“Kayli,” Zarek began.

“Why are you surprised, Father? I was merely looking for answers. Answers you have been unwilling to provide,” Tai retorted, “What else have you been hiding about Mother?”

Silence. To everyone but Andy, Tai’s outburst was a complete surprise.

Zarek’s mouth became tight. He rose from his seat. Slowly. “You dare use such a tone with your father?” His tone quiet.

Andy felt her hair prickle. She was glad his glare wasn’t focused on her.
