Max hated to cut and run after wolfing down her lunch, or rather she didn’t, her sisters were becoming far too interested in the bear shifters in town, and she didn’t want to answer any awkward questions about Cash – thanks to Dana and her big mouth – and she had a bar to open.

Grammy had given her a funny look as she left, sort of a cross between knowing and suspecting with a hint of amusement, and it played on her mind as she’d walked the short trek to town.

Living on the outskirts on a little land of their own had given them the privacy they’d needed as witches to do the moon spells and honour the Sabbats as they saw fit without the twitchy curtains of neighbours or having to travel to be alone, and Max always loved the walk to town, it cleared her head, although, not so much today.

The sound of a throaty motorbike coming down the road behind her made pause for thought, and she hated to turn a look over her shoulder, but she couldn’t help herself.

There he was, sitting on his metal horse, and looking damn sexy doing it. Damn, she just had to look twice, three times, and by the fourth time, he’d slowed down and was riding beside her. “Get on, and I’ll give you a lift,” Cash said with a grin that looked a little stretched.

“On that – with you?” she snorted a chuckle to hide the fact that her heart raced at the thought of it. “No, thanks.”

“You’re gonna be late for work,” Cash said, keeping perfect time with her even though she was sure the man and his machine would rather have been thundering down the road.

“It’s okay; I’m on good terms with the boss,” she said. “You, on the other hand, had better run along.”

“I have it on good authority that the boss won’t be there yet, so I’ve got time to kill,” Cash replied.

“I’m not getting on that with you,” Max said, waving him away, but he wasn’t going anywhere.

“Scared?”

“Of a motorbike?” Max chuckled. “No, I think I can handle it.”

“Must be me then,” Cash said, offering her a drop-dead gorgeous smile and getting shot down with a glare in return.

Max was always one to answer a challenge, even as a kid, it was her weak spot, and he was challenging – for her mind, her body, and that little annoying tap-tap-tapping of temptation that happened whenever she saw him. Cash stopped when she stopped. “Fine,” she said, and knew it was a bad idea, but she climbed on anyway.

That was when her hand touched the bare skin of his arm, and she felt it, a tingle like excitement that raced over her skin, but she broke the contact and dismissed it as a schoolgirl mini-crush on a guy that was way out of her league for obvious reasons.

“Do your worst,” she said, holding on and waiting for him to open the throttle and go hell for leather.
