Abby catches me in the hall.

Are you going on any tours? she asks.

Tours of what?

Boarding schools, of course.

She tosses her chestnut hair, gives me a sideways glance.

We start applying in the fall,

so it’s better to narrow down

where you want to go ahead of time.

Boarding schools?

I say dumbly.

Abby leans forward and whispers.

My mom and her whole family

have always gone to Evergreen,

so I have a great shot at getting in there.

But I want to look at others.

I don’t know why she’s telling me.

She’s always made me feel

like I’m the competition.

About boarding school?

He shrugs. You know my brother went to Walden.

It might be nice to go away.

I think of the times when Chaya and I

are happiest.

It’s when we’re away—

on vacation,

at Camp Allegro.

I walk to class,

ideas flooding me

like waves of music.
