Twelve

I let Gabe play his old rock CDs on the way home without complaint. We both knew he was disappointed that I’d told the kid about his mother early on. We both knew it was simply the way I roll. There really wasn’t much to discuss.

I felt more at peace now that I had done something. There was more to this story, surely, but we had taken a first step.

We played a Jeopardy taped game we had missed earlier in the week and Harry even took his seat to join us. He loves this game. He speaks out an answer now and then and we haven’t had the heart to tell him we don’t know if he’s right or not. So far, the occasional, “way to go, Harry” allows him to feel like he’s part of the family. We nibbled our way through without a real dinner and that felt okay, too.

When it was bedtime, I was happy to curl up against Gabe’s warm chest and pack away my cares and woes.

I woke early with the sun streaming in. I had forgotten to shut the curtains as I do from time to time. I laid in for a few minutes and let the sunbeams warm the covers and throw rainbows against the walls. Even if it was Monday, it felt like it was going to be a good day.

I tiptoed out and went down to make the coffee. Harry was waiting by his dish so I fed him before making my own quick breakfast. Gabe was, surprisingly, still sleeping so I hopped into the guest room shower and tried not to wake him.

As I came out, towel drying my hair, I heard him in the kitchen getting his coffee.

“Hey sleepyhead.”

“Hey gorgeous.” He said with a lazy smile.

We both looked up at the kitchen clock. We haven’t been married long but we both knew what we were thinking. Was there time? There was.

Okay, now looking like a better than good day.

Then reality set in as we returned to the kitchen for a second cup. I made the toast while he scrambled some eggs but it was quickly clear that Gabe had something on his mind, something else rather.

“You might as well tell me now.” I said softly.

He sighed. “You tend to see the world as full of good people who might only need a second chance, Miranda. I wish that were true. But…”

“And there’s the but.”

“Sweetheart,” He put his hands on my arms. “Please don’t take to Nick too fast. We don’t know the boy. That’s all I’m saying.”

I swallowed. “You don’t seriously think that he had anything to do…”

“I don’t have any facts to prove or disprove.” Gabe said sternly. “If there was foul play involved, he has to be a suspect. He had motive—she all but abandoned him. He had opportunity—he happens to be in the same town at the same time. And we don’t know what the means was.”

He had me pegged; my motherly instincts had kicked in as far as Nick was concerned and he was right to warn me.
