The Cache Memory

Some time ago I went to do some changes to a website I was working on. I added more information to the page with both text and pictures, then added a short video on the subject.

When all was done to my satisfaction I saved the page and refreshed the screen to see how it looked. Imagine my frustration when all I saw before me was the ‘old’ page. All the new information that I painstakingly added has disappeared!

I was so annoyed with myself because it was obvious that I had not saved it properly, hence the new material had not been uploaded.

However, when I went back to the admin panel to rectify my mistakes and start over again; the new material was still there on the page. It had been saved after all – but when I visited the screen from the public url – it still showed the old page!

Why was this happening? The reason is simple – and probably something that you are already aware off. In this instance, the browser cache memory was still showing the old page!

What is The Cache Memory?

The Cache (pronounced cash) is a block of memory that is likely to be used again. In other words it is a temporary storage area where copies of data are stored allowing for quick and easy retrieval by tour computer.

Data stored in the cache is faster to use as it does not need to be re-calculated. The page you have been creating or viewing for instance does not have to be built anew by your PC in order for you to view it.

Your ISP (internet service provider), Browser and PC all use cache memory in order to speed up operations.

When your ‘old’ page is stubbornly still showing, usually it is your own browser and so a simple page refresh will sort the problem. Sometimes however it is your internet providers problem, in which case you have to wait till their system refreshes itself.

Other times you may have to delete your temporary internet files in order to show the new page.

From the admin panel of your website - and depending on your system – you may have to dump or delete the Cache.

Whatever route you take to sort out the problem, the answer to your confusion is the same – you were or are, looking at the ‘old’ page.

You have done the work perfectly well, and the results are there to see – but you cannot see the new work because your screen tells you that it has not been done properly – until you clear the cache memory.
