JESUS—OUR FAITH EXAMPLE

One of the most important understandings for any believer to have is that there is only one savior, and we are not Him. Christ is our savior. He is our perfector. He is the miracle worker. He is the healer. And it is only by His life working in and through us that others experience the goodness of God. However, we cannot will people into God’s Kingdom or force them to receive healing. Quite the opposite. Although Jesus was the propitiation for all mankind, each person has to individually accept His sacrifice for himself. Just as we cannot receive salvation or healing on behalf of another, neither are we held responsible for whether or not they receive the truths of Scripture or God’s provision.

Faith is important. Faith is how we access the promises that God’s grace has provided. While healing is only one of the many provisions included in His grace (John 1:16), we must remember that whether or not a person receives from God is not based on us. The Bible says:

For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Philippians 2:13

…who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens. Women received their dead raised to life again…

Hebrews 11:33-35

Faith is a byproduct of our relationship with God. When Jesus ministered, He provoked faith in those He ministered to. He wanted to see what they were believing for and who they thought He was. He needed to know what they thought He could do for them. When people came to Jesus, He questioned them or got them actively involved in what He was doing by telling them to ”stretch out your hand… go your way… show yourself to the priest” (Matthew 12:13, Mark 10:21, Matthew 8:4). Their active participation ignited faith within their hearts and allowed Jesus to do amazing things in their lives.

According to Jesus, people receive in accordance with how they believe.

Go your way and as you have believed let it be done for you.

Matthew 8:13 (emphasis added)

And when He had come into the house, the blind men came to Him. And Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to Him, “Yes, Lord.” Then He touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith let it be to you.”

Matthew 9:28-29 (emphasis added)

And throwing aside his garment, [Bartimaeus] rose and came to Jesus. So Jesus answered and said to him, “What do you want Me to do for you?” The blind man said to Him, “Rabboni, that I may receive my sight.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your faith has made you well.” And immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus on the road.

Mark 10:50-52 (explanation and emphasis added)

Jesus never forced God’s will of healing on anyone.
