Mom shared the rest of her hot chocolate with us. It was sweet and still hot enough to warm my insides. While I sipped, she rummaged around in her coat pocket.

“Found it!” she said happily. “I brought this, too.” Mom held a big dog bone out for Jasper, and she gently took it between her teeth. A string of drool blew onto the blanket, but who cared about that? “A special treat since Jasper helped you find me,” she added.

“And what was your backup plan if we didn’t show up?” I leaned back and watched a seagull soar overhead, content that Mom had expected us.

“I never even considered that possibility. My mother sense told me that you’d come. And you did. I had just enough time here by myself to get everything straight in my head. That’s what I needed to do.” She threw the blankets off and stood up. “I’ve been sitting here for so long, everything is stiff. I’m ready to walk back now. Are you two coming?” She pushed her sunglasses into place and looked at me.

“I kind of like it here but…”

“Sunny has something planned for dinner,” Hitch said.

Had I told him the plan? I didn’t think there’d been time when I shoved the bags into Tilly’s arms and left with Hitch.

He folded the blankets and pulled me to my feet. “Let’s hear it, Sunshine. You and Tilly brought bags of groceries to Jess’s house, which means you cooked up something with her.” I must have raised my eyebrows because Hitch chuckled and said, “Don’t look at me like you think I don’t notice those things.”

Nothing missed Hitch’s eagle eyes. I filed that away for the future, not that I planned to keep secrets from him, but I might want to surprise him sometime.

Hitch pointed to the toboggan with a big grin on his face. “Hey, Anna, I promised you a sleigh ride. Hop on.”

Mom laughed. It made me warm and fuzzy to hear that deep and completely joyous sound. “Thanks, Hitch, but I need the exercise after all this sitting,” she said. “Besides, I had a wonderful sleigh ride with Izzy and Ron this morning. Two in one day seems too extravagant. This day has been filled with highs and lows, but I think the tide has turned away from the lows.”

I hoped she was right.

Mom led us away from Blueberry Bay, across the field toward our cars. It was a quiet walk. A comfortable quiet now that I knew that Mom figured out more details of her morning. Now that she seemed happier.

Hitch broke the silence and pulled me to a stop. “Okay,” he said when I turned to face him, “let’s hear your plan. I don’t like being blindsided.

“To fill you both in, Tilly and I went to the Blueberry Bay Senior Living Apartments.”

Mom scrunched her eyebrows together. “What for? Is Tilly thinking of simplifying her life?”

I almost choked on a snort that erupted after hearing that comment. “Not exactly, Mom, and please don’t ask Tilly that question,” I said.
