Chapter 12
When I returned to the car, Jordan asked, âFind out anything new?â
I shook my head and reached for my latte. âJust more confusion.â As I explained the discrepancies in the stories Iâd heard, he furrowed his brow.
âI wonder whoâs lying?â he muttered, staring at the church.
Just as I was about to answer, a sheriffâs car pulled in. Jordan swore and sunk down into the seat.
Mallory Richards exited the vehicle and I debated whether to go speak with her or not. I disliked the short, muscular woman, but the more I stuck my nose where it didnât belong, the more certain I became that Jordan hadnât killed anyone. Yes, I still had some doubts, but they were slowly fading.
The sheriff walked into the church.
âWhatâs she doing here?â I asked.
âJust seeing whoâs attending and who isnât,â he replied. âSometimes itâs good to take a look at who cared enough to come.â
âIf I killed someone, Iâd never go to their funeral,â I muttered.
âWell, then that may also make you look guilty,â Jordan said. âIf you kill someone and go to mourn their passing, you either feel awful that you offed them, or you truly miss them.â
My thoughts returned to Billy. I had no doubt he loved Brittney. Had he killed her in a rage, and now was back because he felt remorse? He said heâd left because he wanted to get away. Maybe guilt had been the driving force?
I shouldâve asked him if he knew how to braid hair. Something about the braids really bothered me, but I couldnât place why.
But I did have one suspect I could ask who was practically sitting on the floor of my car hiding from the sheriff.
âDid you ever braid Mattieâs hair?â
The question caught him off guard and his head snapped up. âWhy?â he asked.
âI was just curious. Do you know how to braid?â
He sighed. âYes. I used to braid Mattieâs hair for her.â
I nodded, reminding myself that didnât necessarily mean he killed Brittney. Or if he had, heâd been creative in the method. I had been hoping heâd never learned to braid and I could take that to the sheriff and tell her to shove it where the sun donât shine.
As she strolled out of the church, she glanced around, her gaze landing in our direction.
âShe sees us,â I said. Jordan cursed and tried to make himself smaller. âIf I leave now, it will look bad.â
âAgreed. Especially if she finds out Iâm hiding in here,â Jordan replied.
When she stepped off the curb and began walking our way, I jumped out of the car and slammed the door, hurrying to meet her as far away from Jordan as possible. Being caught at the womanâs funeral he was accused of killing wouldnât be a good look for him.
âSheriff!â I called forcing a wave and smile. I really disliked the woman. âJust the person I wanted to talk to!â
Good grief, my hips and back hurt from Zumba. I didnât know how many more dance classes my body could take.
