The classical counterconditioning is a by-product of the reinforcement history you will build up. A dog who guards the car or his crate can also benefit enormously from the placement exercises in this section, as well as from a D&C hierarchy along the lines of the ones presented for food and object guarding. The D&C variables to pay attention to are how long he’s been in the crate or car, the angle, orientation and distance of approach, whether there are also other resources present, how warmed up he is in the session and finally, how close you get to him and whether there is body contact or not
