CHAPTER ELEVEN
Junior’s paw smashed into my chest like a wrecking ball, knocking me on the ground. Pain flared bright and hot. I rolled away and leaped up before he stomped on me. He roared as he charged again. I was able to sidestep him before he made contact.
I needed a weapon. The thing in front of me had teeth four inches long and claws even longer. Its jaws snapped like a piranha. I knew squat about bear physiology, but I had a hunch. I used all my strength with a straight kick to the creature’s head. He roared as he stumbled backward.
Damn. That kick could dent a vault door and shatter a concrete wall. It should’ve killed the bear outright. Instead, the animal shook his head and huffed in anger.
It did make the grizzly weary, though. Instead of immediately barreling forward, the beast opened his huge jaws and crept toward me. It wasn’t a roar coming from his mouth, or a growl, but more like a challenge that sent my bones shivering. I went into a fighter’s stance. We circled each other with our eyes locked.
Finally, my foot hit something in the snow. I curled my tennis shoe under it and snapped it up in the air on instinct. I felt the hair on my neck rise. It looked like the same branch I had used to kill the black bear yesterday.
I didn’t have time to think about it. Snow began to fall, making the arena even more dangerous. I snuck a glance at Thelma and saw she was as far from Grandfather as she dared. Something glinted in her hands. Don’t do it, I thought.
The bear swiped at me, but I batted the claws aside with the wood. It was testing me. My heart raced as the world narrowed to just the monster and me.
Junior roared again and rushed forward. I swung the branch at his snout again, but he knew better. The creature slapped it aside and rose up briefly on his two back legs. The other paw came from nowhere and smashed me on the side of the head. The jaws came down, followed by hundreds of pounds of muscle.
I fell backward and let the bear come down. He landed on all fours, but I had curled my legs up with my feet on his chest. With all my enhanced strength, I pushed upward. It was like leg-lifting a Humvee. Instead of flying off, the Kodiak stumbled back on two legs. His front paws clawed the air until he twisted and landed again on all fours.
Blood tricked down my neck, and my ears rang from the clubbing. I couldn’t tell up from down. A roar knocked me out of my confusion. I rolled to the right on pure instinct as he charged.
I sprang to my feet and we circled again, each one testing the other for a weakness. The snow fell harder, limiting my visibility. The only weapon I had was a broken tree branch. I could deal with my own death, but I couldn’t let Thelma pay for my weakness.
