Chapter 3: Effective Everyday Learning Strategies
Here are some basic strategies that will help you remember almost anything you need to recall.
Use Your House and Car to Remember
One good idea for remembering things is to use the different spaces you live in and use regularly. When you can remember where you put things, you can always make sure to be mindful of what youâre doing when you place an item somewhere.
For example, say youâre putting your glasses on the coffee table. You can remember you put your glasses in that location by saying to yourself, âI was brushing my teeth when I put my glasses on the coffee table.â
Just saying those words aloud will help you verbalize your thoughts of the glasses and make the association with the coffee table. You will then likely not lose your glasses again. Instead, you will have made the audiovisual word association and incorporated the spatial aspect, which helps you to see, hear, and speak the word.
Another option you can do is try to visualize different things as having a place in your home. You can label them in different parts of your home or room and then you can bring those to life in your memory. You can easily recall where everything is and deconstruct the rooms of your home, so you can find whatever it is you have placed there. It will help you stay organized and keep everything in good order in your home.
You can do the same thing with your car. You can use your car to help you remember where different things are. For example, you can visualize items in your glove compartment, in the back seat, or in the trunk. You can use your audiovisual and spatial-temporal memory to help you locate all the things in your car, which will help you remember well.
Use Your Body to Remember
In addition to your car and home, you can also use your body to remember things. For example, if you have a friend named Melanie, and you want to remember her name and face, you can make an association. You could think âmelonâ and âknee,â and you could physically point to your knee at the time of speaking. Making this connection right away will enable you to remember things faster and more efficiently. Try to find the best way to make such associations. It will help you a lot.
When you have to memorize a list of items you need to buy at the grocery store, you can also use this technique to remember everything. For example, if you have to buy several items, such as milk, eggs, cheese, cat food, and bread, you could use your body to be the placemaker for each part of this list. You could say something like âIâm lifting milk and eggs with my hands and cheese on my knees with cat food on my back and bread on my thigh.â You could even make up some story. In the end, you will succeed in remembering all the key information.
