Stress: Immune System Disruptions

Tania’s unchecked stress spurred by less parasympathetic activity led to her sympathetic nerve fibers firing excitedly. This meant higher than normal levels of norepinephrine. Extending into her immune organs, the release of norepinephrine in close proximity and directly into receptors in her lymph nodes, thymus, spleen, and bone marrow made her immune cells receptors “hear” the stress signals and reduce normal cell activity. Because most of her immune organs host norepinephrine receptors, stress and its messengers, CRH and norepinephrine, play a role inducing inflammation.
