CHAPTER 23: OLD FRIEND

Of course this was happening.

“Chester!” I roared, half-running and half-stumbling down the stairs. I practically vaulted myself down a flight in my urgency to keep him from crashing.

“That lady…her name is…Chester?” Katrin half-asked half-stammered.

“Why?” Burt asked—as if that was the most logical question, even with a total stranger in his home.

“You don’t know the beginning of it!” I yelled.

“Wait! Why is that lady in our house?” Burt asked, suddenly realizing what was happening.

“We…uh…adopted him!” I responded. “Me and Melina!”

“Him? You adopted…him?” Katrin just pointed at Chester, who was entering the bathhouse with single-minded determination. “Don’t you mean adopted her?”

“Long story,” I replied.

Her eyes just bulged even more.

“Whoever that is, they are the same age as you! Maybe older!” Katrin stammered, continuing her confused protests.

“No. I’m older!” Chester shouted back, using his monstrous growly voice even in the female-Kristan body. “I’m older than Damon! Not as old as Melina though! She’s hundred.”

Burt’s eyes could have exploded from his sockets. “Hundred?”

I supposed that none of them had realized how old elves truly lived…I’d been dazed after learning Melina’s age too, as she looked the same age as me. But poor Burt and Katrin were just receiving revelation after revelation.

“I bath!” Chester shouted. “Human bath! I want bath too! I bath with Damon! I’m blending in! I’m blending in!”

Katrin just gaped at me. “You…she…bath…isn’t that totally inappropriate?”

I didn’t even have time to begin explaining how utterly ridiculous and inappropriate Chester’s behavior was…

I decided just not to.

“Trust me,” I said. “He…she….he…look, whoever that is, they are strong. They will help us with the four. And…trust me when I say they have your best interests at heart.”

And that was true.

Chester had said he liked Burt and Katrin….and if they kept feeding him, which they undoubtedly would, their interests were more than aligned.

“Um, okay then…” Katrin said. “I trust you…”

She still sounded hesitant though, so I just waved my hand upstairs. “Don’t worry. Melina will explain everything.”

At the same time, I sent Melina a message in the party chat, asking her to talk to Burt and Katrin as I sorted things out with Chester.

She wasn’t happy about it. “Explain? How can I explain a woman suddenly appearing in their house!”

“Well, at least they didn’t see Chester with the tentacles…or the giant boobs…think about it. I did make your job easier.”

“Don’t even remind me about the boobs,” Melina shot back.

“Just say he’s a new party member or something. Good luck!”

By then, I’d made it to the basement stairs, so I shut off Melina’s indignant flood of messages.

Despite the chaos, I had to admit that Burt and Katrin had refurbished the basement into something truly special. It was hard to believe that this luxurious bath existed beneath their humble store, but as Katrin said, this place had originally been some kind of inn or hostel.

That really showed here.

If I had to guess, before the rise of the pijaca and the four’s control, there’d been some very nice facilities south of the river too.

The sound of dripping water echoed through the palatial basement bathroom.
