Healing the Gap between Enlightened and Ordinary Persons
Another interesting point is that Milarepa did not end this song in the customary way. Generally, he would say that he hoped you enjoyed this song and so on, but he just stopped this song very abruptly, saying, “My mind is thus devoid of hope and fear.” And when he sang this song, he created a quality of tremendous energy in the cave: the tremendously positive and living quality of his realization. According to the story, the ladies immediately asked him, “What other discoveries have you had?” This means that they also were enormously inspired. It seems that he had created such an inspiring situation that they did not feel a distance between Milarepa, being a great, enlightened person, and themselves, being just ordinary common peasants. There seems to have been a healing of that kind of gap. These women did not hesitate. They did not pause and look at each other or anything like that, but they immediately stretched on and asked questions. This is quite rare in Tibetan manners. Generally, when people are trying to be polite and respectful to a person, they always stop shy of actually constructing a sentence or request. Particularly nowadays, people would be very shy about talking about anything to do with spirituality. But the ladies from Nyanang were very inspired; they immediately asked for the next song, and Milarepa responded in the same inspired way.
