CHAPTER 14

The inside of the Glimmerspell Public Library is warm and toasty, with paisley carpeting, blond wooden tables and bookshelves scattered about, and an alcove to the left of the new releases section that houses one too many grown women covered in glitter.

“Billie! I made a beaded necklace,” Sunny calls out and elicits the ire of at least twelve different librarians.

She’s seated with a group of women, all busy slicing, dicing, gluing, and glittering, so I snap a quick picture of my bestie in the midst of the melee.

Lucinda laughs as she speeds our way. Her hair is up in a messy bun, and she’s wearing a cranberry sweater with a matching skirt. The bright yellow lanyard around her neck has a nametag attached that dangles around her belly and spells out her name in all caps.

“We were just wrapping up for the afternoon,” she tells us. “You just missed the children’s hour.” She nods to a table full of various pieces of construction paper with what looks to be leaves, beans, and seeds glued into different shapes such as hearts and pumpkins. “Those projects are still drying. We’ll be decorating pine cones tomorrow.” She nods my way. “I try to utilize as many natural ingredients as I can find here on the grounds when I can. I’ve already blown through half the budget at the crafts store downtown. That’s where I get most of the beads, the glitter, the construction paper, and whatnot. And for the older gals, we host a scrapbooking class. Lots of die-cuts and washi tape.”

“I’m taking notes,” Iona teases.

Or not.

“Come on, Grizzy,” Teddy says, snuggling with her sweet cat. “Let’s show off our bottle of to-kill-ya to Sunny and then find ourselves a few paper cups. It’s time to liven up this party.”

“It’s not a party, it’s a library,” Iona tells her. “And while you’re at it, get a cup for me, too.”

“Ooh.” Lucinda wiggles her shoulders as Teddy and Grizzy take off. “Someone is in a suspiciously good mood. What’s gotten into you, Iona?”

“She’s been thinking about her wedding night,” I offer—because it’s true. “She’s also been thinking a lot about Neville Crenshaw. In fact, that whole double murder thing that Glimmerspell is embroiled in is really doing a number on her these days.”

Lucinda’s expression sours. “It’s doing a number on me, too. I can’t believe Millicent is gone.” Her hand clutches at her throat. “I’ve never seen anything so violent. I’m so sad my friend met such a horrible end. And Neville was a prince when I worked with him a few months back.”

“That’s right,” I say. “You mentioned he took care of your father’s funeral needs.”

“Cremation,” she offers. “He even offered me a steep discount on his services. Or so he said. I didn’t exactly shop around. Although, I probably should have. I didn’t realize that Neville had such a contentious relationship with his rival, Fitzgerald Jenson.”

“Fitzgerald?” I ask as the dark-haired man comes to mind. “Oh, that’s right. Elliot mentioned something about him owning a funeral home as well.
