Chapter Five

The pains of time ravage the unweary

Even as life flows along its banks.

Swim in the stream,

Glide along the waves,

Flow in harmony,

Or dissovle on the rocks broken on your journey.

You’re listening to Mary Midnight online and in your mind.

Even the strong crumble in the war of time.

Only those who flow with the current survive the Fall.

Eugene pushed CC’s bedroom door open. “Hey,” she said, and stopped. No one was in the bed. A whiff of coffee tickled her nose and she leaped down the stairs to the living room and found CC, feet stretched in front of her on the coffee table, slumped back on the couch, asleep. The enormous television screen rotated through pictures of Austin. Eugene stepped forward on her toes, hitting the board that squeaked. CC sat up and shook her head.

Eugene cringed. “Sorry. Didn’t mean to wake you.”

Eugene jumped when Cesar spoke from behind her. “Just made a fresh pot,” he said, and handed her a cup. He sat in the chair next to the couch after handing CC the other cup.

Eugene pursed her lips. “You two been doing this all night?”

“I fell asleep a few times,” said CC. “I’m just not finding the pattern.”

“Maybe there’s not one,” offered Cesar.

“Madmen do things for a reason. Just because we don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s not there.” CC pulled a keyboard onto her lap. “And this monster is no madman.”

“Unfortunately,” said Eugene, moving Fluffy aside and sitting next to CC. “I have more data for you. Body of a nine-year girl was found last night outside her apartment complex. No details in the news, but there’s something familiar about the address.” She handed her tablet to CC.

CC returned it and typed the address into her own computer. The television, with its scrolling photos of Austin, changed to a map of Austin. She added a blue dot marking the latest body. “Does the story say whether the girl lived in the building?”

“She went missing over three weeks ago,” said Eugene. “Might be worth checking out, seeing why it took so long to report her missing.”

“I’ll call Renaldo,” said CC. “Where’s my phone?”

Eugene jumped off the couch, resisting the urge to cringe even as she felt her shoulders shrink and her cheeks burn. “Oh, sorry. I’ve got it upstairs. Needed it to hack into James Earl’s phone records. I’ll go get it.”

Cesar asked, “Have you found anything?”

“Maybe,” Eugene said, shrugging her shoulders. “Maybe not. Let me get the phone. I’ll show you.”

As Eugene turned to walk out, she stopped at the sound of Mike entering from the back door. Stanly, from the bar, was with him, and Mike was on the phone. “I don’t know,” he was saying. “Her cars here. Yes,” he stopped and looked at CC. “She’s here. Come on over.”

“Who’s coming?” asked CC.

“Renaldo,” said Mike. “He says he’s been trying to reach you for two hours, but your voice mail won’t pick up.”

“Eugene,” shouted CC.

“On it,” shouted Eugene, and leaped up the stairs, keeping her ears open to what the others were saying.
