CHAPTER 15

The training finally ended after what seemed like hours. As the four of us trooped back to the kitchen for much-needed coffee, I glanced at the clock hanging above the sink. My heart sank when I realized we were only practicing for forty-five minutes. My head swam with too much information—safety, stance, aim, grip, and safety again. Between Sal and Santino, we had enough instruction to last a lifetime.

I sank into a cushioned chair at the table as I waited for Sal’s famous Hawaiian coffee to be served. Sal drank it exclusively, but it was too pricey for my budget.

“I made a blackberry pie last night,” Amy said. “Want a piece?”

My mouth watered at the thought of one of her pies. Amy’s pies and cakes were better than my favorite bakery. I pulled at the waist of my jeans, happily noticing there was room for a piece of heaven. “Yep, make it a skinny piece though.”

She smiled. “You want those jeans to continue fitting, don’t you?”

I shrugged. “Pretty much.”

Sal placed the anticipated cup of coffee in front of me, grinning. “Drink all you want.”

I nodded, reaching for the coffee. “Thanks, Sal.”

Santino leaned against the counter, coffee cup in hand, watching the three of us.

I looked over at him. “Come sit down and relax.”

He shook his head. “No time. As soon as I finish this coffee, I have to head to the office. Antonio took my classes this morning, but he’ll be relieving me in a few minutes. He’ll be with you until after lunch, then Bill will take over until evening.”

“I thought Logan only wanted me escorted not guarded.”

Santino shrugged. “I follow orders, and those were the orders.”

I frowned. “When did he change his mind?”

Santino was unaffected by my annoyance. “No idea.”

“He wants you guarded all the time now.” Bob’s voice came from the doorway.

“How long have you been here?” I was irritated that I didn’t feel his arrival. He was becoming entirely too adept at using his stealth mode these days.

He snorted. “Long enough to notice neither of you ladies are very good with a gun.”

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Santino trying to control his grin as he listened to Bob’s analysis of our practice session. I opened my mouth to speak, but Amy beat me to the punch.

“I didn’t know you were an expert on firearms, Bob.” Sugar dripped from every word, and I hoped Bob realized she was being catty.

Bob’s face reddened. “Well, I wouldn’t necessarily use the term expert.”

“What term would you use?” Amy persisted, sugar continuing to drench each word.

I smiled slightly. “You’ve never fired a gun in your life, have you?”

He looked at the floor. “Depends on what you mean.”

I frowned. “Did you pull the trigger and a bullet came out of a gun?”

His face brightened. “Yep.”

My eyes became slits as I studied him. He was maneuvering for some reason, using evading tactics. I drummed my fingers on Sal’s kitchen table, watching his discomfort as my stare continued. I was completely focused on his face.
