Chapter Twenty

A telephone call from Garrett halted my efforts at choosing an outfit for the dreaded party. Sure that he’d ask me about Aunt Euphemia, I answered the phone, prepared to wriggle out of any questions he had.

“Liv!” he said. “I have some news.”

“You’ve caught the baby snatcher?” I said hopefully.

“No! Jofrid has had her baby!”

“Oh, that’s wonderful!”

“Do you want to see it?”

“I, well ...yes! Although-”

“Great. I’m waiting outside. Come on down.”

The phone went dead. With no option but to meet him downstairs, and excited to see the baby we had been waiting so many weeks for, I slipped into the passenger seat, wondering if the child had been born with a mop of werewolf-like dark hair or even a monobrow.

The birth had been quick, Garrett informed me, a complete surprise that meant there had been no time to go to the hospital or call me. A midwife had visited during the morning, and all was well.

“It’s such a relief,” Garrett said with a broad smile as we pulled in through the gates. “Mother and baby are doing well and they’re all safe and no prying eyes.” He gave a deep sigh. “We did the right thing keeping them here. There hasn’t been a whiff of rumour that anyone knows about their location.”

“That’s good. I haven’t mentioned it to my aunts.”

“Thanks. I’m sure we can trust them, but the less they know the better.”

“How long do you think they’ll be with you?”

“It’s a big house, Liv. It could be permanent. I know Uncle Tobias would like that.”

“But you can’t keep them secret forever,” I said. “The baby will grow up without any friends!”

Garrett sighed once more. “You’re right and the only way out of it is to bring the culprits to justice.”

“Prison?”

“Or exile, along with their henchmen,” he said. “Finn thinks he’s got a solid case. He told me last night that he was nearly ready to present his findings to the Institute.”

“Is the Institute clean, then?”

“I don’t think so, which is why we’ve got to start building allies, people who are willing to take action.”

We turned off the main road and made our way down the woodland track to Blackwood Manor and, after opening the iron gates, entered the wide and circular driveway. To the side of the house one of the gardeners wheeled a barrow full of garden clippings.

Once inside the house, Garrett led me to the suite of rooms the couple had made into their home. A knock at the door was answered by a smiling Finn. He gave Garrett a bear hug and then wrapped his arms around me. “Congratulations!” I said into his chest as the hug grew tight. I sensed his ecstatic and whirling emotions.

“They’re so beautiful, Liv!” he said, his eyes moist. “Come on through.”

He led us through the apartment to the bedroom where Finn sat propped up in bed, light gleaming around her golden hair like a halo. In her arms she held the swaddled child.

“It’s a boy!” declared Finn. “He’s amazing. Just perfect.
