The next major change was the decision to fit one of the Deeley engines with a superheater, which had been proven to be successful with the earlier conversion of the ‘Belpaires’ and many of the Johnson class 2 4-4-0s. No 1040 was fitted with a superheater in 1913 and its G9 boiler was redesignated G9S. The success of this led to a change in the authority for 1000-1004 to include new frames and a new boiler with Schmidt superheater. All except 1002 were rebuilt in 1914 and 1915. No 1002 was not returned to traffic after rebuilding until 1919. During the war, no further Compounds were superheated, priority being given to the class 2 and 3 4-4-0s. Nos 1005-1039 and 1041-1044 only received superheated boilers when their existing G9s required replacement, 1008 and 1014 being the first in 1919 and 1022 the last in 1928.
