MacNeice sat down at his desk and asked Aziz, âTell me about your meeting with Dr. Garrick . . .?â
She opened her notepad. âOur interview was just under an hour . . . Elaine was distraught and didnât understand anything from her husbandâs phone call. She said, âArnie was incoherent and terrified; he kept saying he was sorry and flipped out when I said I was almost home.â But the best way to hear that interview is unfiltered.â
Aziz opened the file on her cellphone. As they listened, it was clear that Elaine Garrick couldnât imagine anyone wanting to harm her husband. âHe can be irascible at work, but that just shows how serious he is about risk. Our personal finances are separate, but the universityâs commercialization office has just awarded Arnie a commission to purchase and develop more advanced technology for his lab.â
âHas that been purchased?â Aziz asked.
âI donât know if it has . . .â
On the recording, Aziz went straight to the point. âCindy Morrow, one of your husbandâs masterâs students, was told he had a gambling problem; were you aware of that?â
âPeople always tear Arnie down. When he didnât predict the 2008 collapse, they conveniently forget that he correctly predicted the recovery.â
âIâll take that as a no. And yet, if your finances are separate, how can you be certain he wasnât in financial difficulty?â Aziz asked.
âWhy are you asking that? Iâm here to help find my husband â I donât know why ââ Elaine was getting increasingly exasperated.
Aziz remained steadfast in her response. âTwo reasons. Money issues are often the root cause of kidnappings, and because Arnie told you he was sorry for making a mistake â that he fucked up.â
Garrickâs voice faltered. âI trust my husband. I trust him. Do you understand that, Detective?â
It wasnât a question that sought an answer, so Aziz continued. âOutside your husbandâs home office, we found two passports â yours and his â and cash totalling twenty-two one-hundred-dollar bills. The safe was open. Did you have the combination for that safe, Elaine?â
âNo . . . I believe Arnie keeps his patents in there.â
âDid you know about the cash?â
âNo . . .â She paused. âItâs likely his idea of rainy-day money, but I wasnât aware of it.â
âDo you believe your husband is faithful, Elaine?â
After a long sigh, Elaine said, âSure, there were flirtations with grad students, but that was a long time ago . . . so the answer is, yes. I believe Arnie is a faithful, loving, supportive husband.â
Aziz turned the recording off. âShe said Arnie never used drugs, and given her work, sheâd know if he had. Nor could she recall any mention of threats or enemies â beyond those typical of academia. I called the universityâs commercialization office earlier. A decision on whether theyâll provide confidential information about Garrickâs commission is being made before noon. I told them that if itâs declined, Iâll come with a court order.â
âVery good,â MacNeice said. âGarrick wouldnât be the first husband to have a secret life, and if itâs not women or drugs, it could be gambling.
