Jett paced between his futon and the kitchen while he tried to come up with a plan. He couldn’t live the rest of his life with Norma in his head—poking, prodding, mocking.

Clyde’s school was out of the question, not when Norma could die before he finished. Still, Jett could land a role tomorrow, and it was unlikely she’d live long enough to see him on the big screen. Producing a film took time. From the movie announcement, to pre-production, filming, post-production, and release, it was at least two years.

But he wasn’t giving up.

He still had a chance to prove her wrong.

If he landed a role in a big film, there would be a news release—an announcement about the part, an announcement that would make headlines in his hometown newspaper, headlines Norma couldn’t ignore. And that had to be enough.

It needed to be enough.

Now, the biggest hurdle—his promise to Clyde. He wouldn’t find Jett auditions until he completed school. He needed a class. Something quick. A class that taught a new tool or technique that would improve his next audition. Something that would fool Clyde into believing Jett had attended a reputable school. That he had upheld his end of their agreement.

Jett had just the thing. Something he’d seen on the Hollywood Underground before Beaufort had called.

A washed-out ’80s movie star, Cory-something-or-other, taught a two-week method-acting course online. He scrolled through, clicked on the link, prayed the cost wouldn’t be an issue. Luckily, it wasn’t.

Now, he had to convince Clyde—a man who had an unparalleled ability to detect BS—that he was enrolled in a “reputable” program that happened to be shorter than any other advertised.

Heart jackhammering, he took a deep breath and dialed Clyde’s number.

Clyde picked up on the first ring. “Kid! How’s the school thing coming?”

“I found a course,” Jett said. Not a lie.

“That’s great, kid. Just great. Which studio?”

“Stanley,” Jett said, still the truth. He had registered for their seminar—a seminar he wouldn’t be attending. Now for the lie. He gave Clyde the dates and held his breath.

“Stanley is good,” Clyde agreed. “But a two-week course? That doesn’t sound right.”

He doesn’t believe you. Norma laughed. What kind of actor are you?

Jett’s face flushed. “The course is some kind of pilot program,” he said quickly, cursing how uncertain he sounded. He waited, expecting Clyde to push back, to say something more. But Clyde’s computer pinged.

“Sounds good, kid,” he said, dismissively, fingers tapping on his keyboard.

“Clyde?”

“Hmmmm…” Clyde said, still tapping.

“Remember our agreement. I want auditions.”

“Agreements are my business, kid.”
