Stanley waited by the rear exit, but Lauren left through the front door and he had to walk fast to make up ground. After a few blocks, she eventually stopped at a crosswalk and began scrolling through her phone.

Traffic was light and she could have crossed against the light, but she was absorbed by the screen and didn’t hear the footsteps behind her.

She startled at the last possible moment, dropping her phone, but the crook of Stanley’s arm was already around her, tightening fast, and she didn’t have the breath for a scream.
