But coat hangers and wringers are not what draw more than 1,000 visitors to the museum every year. It’s a macabre fascination with slammers and pokeys. To that end, a guide leads you through the sheriff’s living quarters and the large kitchen, where his wife would prepare meals for up to 30 prisoners a night and then pass plates through a small door in the wall. On the second floor are rows of 6-by-8-foot cells, complete with the graffiti that disheartened convicts scratched on the walls in the 1930s. You can even walk through the maximum-security cells, now filled with a historical toy collection, view the old padded cell, and examine the holding pen for “ladies.”

The Old Jail Museum (269–673–8292; alleganoldjail.com) is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fri and Sat May through Aug and Sat 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept through Apr. There is no admission fee. To reach the museum, take M 222 (exit 55) off US 131 and head west into Allegan. The old jail is at 113 Walnut St., between Hubbard and Trowbridge.
