Vacation Magic
With one last look in my rearview mirror, I pulled out of the Witchâs Warehouse parking lot. I knew Natalie, the owner, was a savvy witch who would take good care of my kit, but I felt naked without the duffels in my car. Those bags held all the supplies I needed to have on hand in case the police needed help with a really big problemâeverything from individual spell components to healing charms. I didnât need the supplies on every case I worked, but when I did, they were vital.
Turning up the radio, I tried to shake off the feeling of being unarmed. Nothing bad was going to happen. Not only did I have my wand, but Natalie had assured me that sheâd finish her evaluation by the time I finished with my grocery shopping. I usually did my own maintenance, but those bags were special order, spelled for containment and stability. What that meant in practical terms was that the bags were designed to keep different magical things from interacting with one another. Plus, if an interaction did occur, the bags would do their best to keep it from spreading. To keep the warranty in effect, they and their contents had to go in for inspection once a year. Iâd put it off as long as I could, but it was time.
Knowing how important those bags were to me, Natalie had come in on a Sunday morning just to work on them. It was the best we could do. With most of the townâs residents safely tucked into their church services, odds were Iâd get through the time without an emergency.
A few minutes later, I was sitting at a red light, blinker on, only one turn from my groceries. The bright-blue sky and blinding sun made me wish for the warmth of summer rather than the chill of early spring. The radio was so loud that I didnât hear my phone ringing until the song ended. It was probably my mom, wanting to reassure me that my kit was in good hands. Sheâd been using Natalie for years and knew her to be a capable and reliable witch. I answered without looking to see who was calling. âOaks Consulting. Michelle speaking.â
âMaâam, this is Officer Kent.â
My stomach knotted. Officer Kent was with the local sheriffâs department. âWhat can I do for you?â
âWe have a situation involving magical creatures. Can you assist?â
The light finally turned, and I hurried into a parking spot. âWhatâs the address?â
He quickly provided the information. I didnât bother writing it down. I knew exactly where I was going. âHas Officer Rodriguez been informed?â
âHeâs on scene, but heâs unable to take the time to contact you directly. Last I heard, speed was requested.â There was a crack and a muffled voice. âDispatch requests that you stop at the ambulance and head through the field to assist officers on that side.â
âGot it. Iâll be there soon.â I ended the call and tossed the phone on the passenger seat.
