Chapter 17

Beginning the Other Case

Friday, late-night — Saturday morning, June 25

The deputies drove all six of us to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s local office because the shooting had happened outside the jurisdiction of Upland. The deputies incarcerated Willie in a cell as we awaited our fates. We all sat on wooden chairs, our backs to a bare wall, facing the front desk. The sergeant on duty spent his time shuffling papers on his tall desk, answering questions from citizens, and watching us like a hawk.

I sat on the end, closest to the door. Garth sat uncomfortably on my right. “What the hell is taking so long?” I whispered through gritted teeth, watching his reactions with my one good eye.

“They have to get their facts straight, Major. As long as we all tell the same story, we should be all right.”

“I’m glad Anneka was able to take Vano to his mother at the carnival. I was hoping to be there for the reunion.”

“Oh, you sentimental old fool,” Garth laughed. “Why would you want to deal with an elderly woman blubbering?”

I squirmed on the hard chair, my hind end starting to feel numb. I glanced up at the desk sergeant. “They’ve already spoken to Reed. You’d imagine they’d take his word for everything and let us leave.”

“You know better than that, Major. Whoever is doing the interrogation is being thorough. Did you see who it is?”

“No. He must have come in through another entrance.” At that point, Shelby Rhoads walked out of the interrogation room. He silently walked past us. As he exited through the door to the parking area, he turned his head toward me with a grin.

It was now Basil Johnston’s turn to be grilled by the investigators. He left his wooden seat, rubbed his butt, and entered the room. I leaned forward, looking around at Max Brier. “It appears that you’re next, Max. Do you have your story straight?”

The desk sergeant stood and scowled at me. “No collaborating with another witness,” he growled. “You got that?”

“Yes. Of course,” I barked, then thought it might be a suitable time to make a friend. “I should have known better, Sergeant. I apologize.”

The bulky sergeant sat back down, giving a heavy sigh. He picked up a pen and went back to work. Garth glanced over to me with a grin on his handsome face.

“Don’t look at me like that,” I whispered. Garth’s smirk turned into an under-his-breath giggle as he turned away.

Soon, Basil left, and Max Brier replaced him. I continually gazed up at the clock on the wall behind the desk, wishing it would move at a faster pace. I wanted to get out of there so I could be with Anneka. I wasn’t sure where she was now. At the carnival, or maybe waiting for us at the seashore office, or she could have gone straight home.

Early the next morning, the desk phone at the sheriff’s office rang. The sergeant made several grunting noises before he hung up. He turned to us and called out, “He wants you both.
