Chapter 16

Chatting with Grace

Arriving at the manor house after three p.m., Anneka and I decided to get some work done by interrogating the family members. As we walked toward our room on the second floor, we passed Faith, the upstairs maid. “Faith, can we have a word with you?” I said as she walked by. She was the same age as petite Ciara, but built more solidly. I assumed she had grown accustomed to manual labor as a child and continued to work hard today. Her sandy hair was pulled back into a bun, her blue eyes looked weak and drowsy.

“Certainly, sir. Is there something amiss in your room?”

“No, no, my dear. That isn’t it at all,” Anneka said, then smiled cheerily. “We need to discuss Mr. Killian’s death with the family.”

“I’m not a family member,” she said, her voice shaking.

“We know. We just need to know who is home right now,” I said.

“Oh, I see,” Faith said quietly. “Well, I just came from Miss Grace’s room. She’s in there reading. Mrs. Beth O’Donnell is in the family room with all the children. Rachel went out again. Mrs. Fitzgerald is still feeling poorly.”

“I can imagine she is,” I said. Faith smiled at me knowingly.

“Let’s see, I was led to believe Mr. Sean had taken the day off, but after he dropped you off, he left.”

“Yes, I noticed that,” I said. “He mumbled something about an appointment.”

“No one has seen Jimmy since his da was murdered. I’m sure he had taken it poorly. He’s such a young lad,” Faith whispered. “Some of the staff think he had somethin’ to do with it.”

“Why is that, Faith?” Anneka asked.

“Well, I feel funny sayin’ anything. I’m not family, ye know. But he and his da were having a problem. Mr. Killian thought working in the movies was beneath an O’Donnell. Jimmy told him it was his chosen career, and he planned on pursuing it. His da roared at him, threatened to put him out. Jimmy tol’ the ol’ man to go ahead and do it. Those were his words, ye understand.”

“How long ago did this happen?” Anneka asked.

“It happens a lot. But the last time was about five days ago.”

“How do you know all this?”

“Well, Ciara was cleanin’ the lounge next to Killian’s den. With the door ajar, she heard them squabbling,” Faith said. “She wasn't eavesdropping or nothin’. They were bein’ loud, and she had to finish her work.”

“I understand,” I smiled. “No harm done. Is that the last time you saw Jimmy?”

“Aye.” She shrugged. “I think he left the house after the fight.”

“You’re a wealth of information, Faith,” I said. “Of course, no one will know you told us, or that Ciara spied on them.”

I turned to Anneka. “Maybe we should have a chat with Grace.”

“Sounds all right to me. Faith, if we need you, we’ll find you. You seem to know what’s going on around here.”

“Okay,” Faith said. “Ciara and I are best friends. We keep each other informed about the goings-on around here.
