Chapter 23

The Chase

We headed for the stairs going up to the lobby; Hammond ran up to us. “Hold on, those mobsters are gonna take US Highway 18 west. Ain’t no place else to go from here. It ain’t no more than a dirt road, though.”

“How do you know that?” I asked, anxious to get started.

Garth saw my rambunctious attitude and shook my arm. “Major, listen to the man. This is his county. Go ahead, Hammond, where are they going?”

“I’ll answer that,” Hunt said. “The Kafkas work for Lorenzo Marcini and the mob. The Chicago organization sent Marcini to California to set up a bootlegging operation.”

“We’re threatening all that,” Garth said. “No wonder they want no part of a murder or anything to muddle their plans.”

“He has his headquarters somewhere between Victorville and Palmdale,” Hunt said, his voice steady. “Highway 18 is the fastest way to get there. But it’s a rough ride.”

“Why are we standing here talking about it?” I bellowed. I ran up the steps to the lobby. I turned, grabbed the banister, and threw myself up to the second floor, every muscle in my body crying out.

Within minutes I had my Colt and joined Garth, who was waiting in the parking lot in my Bentley. “You got your .45?” I asked while I started the engine. It roared as I flew out of the parking lot, onto the dirt road.

Garth patted under the shoulder of his jacket. “Always ready for trouble, old man. Move it. Make a left at the exit,” he shouted.

In my side mirror I saw the three county men following us in their Model T Ford patrol car. “It looks like we might be on our own. They’ll never keep up with us in that thing.”

Garth looked back. He smiled while we added distance between us. “It’s a good thing,” he yelled. “The coppers have Tommy guns. I prefer to rescue your wife in one piece.”

Anneka … the thought of losing her scared the hell out of me. I floored the accelerator and drove off, my tires kicking up rocks, flinging them in all directions. If the Ford was close, our dust storm probably blinded them. Garth hung onto the dashboard.

“Don’t worry, Mr. Braveheart. You’re safe.”

Fortunately, we hit a straight section of the road. I increased my speed to over eighty, the late afternoon sun lighting our way. I wouldn’t have wanted to drive that speed in the dark of night. Off in the distance, we saw a cloud of dust.

Garth pointed to it. “There they are, Major. Keep driving toward that dust cloud. They must have a slower auto for us to have caught up so quickly.”

“Or they’re not expecting us,” I replied. The eight-litre engine in my Bentley could travel like the wind. We drew closer to the dust cloud ahead. I clung to the steering wheel, gripping tightly while the wind blew my shaggy hair into my face. I glued my eye to the auto in front, now about a mile away.

As we neared their vehicle, Garth let out a yelp and called over to me.
