Stephen Verkamp (left) and Ralph Nye of Lowell Observatory are shown in 2008 removing the Verkamp Meteorite in preparation for transport to Lowell Observatory. In 1906, John George Verkamp set up a tent at the south rim of the Grand Canyon and sold souvenirs to tourists. He acquired a meteorite from a neighbor not long after he opened for business. In 2008, the Verkamp family decided to close the shop after 102 years of operation, and they decided to offer meteorite to Lowell Observatory. (Courtesy of Kevin Schindler, Lowell Observatory.)
