Congratulations! You have just been through a rather sophisticated and brain-taxing example of recursion. Now let us take a look at a recursion that offers us a different kind of challenge. This recursion comes from an offhand remark I made last column. I used the odd variable name tato, mentioning that it is a recursive acronym standing for tato (and tato only). Using this fact you can expand tato any number of times. The sole principle is that each occurrence of tato on a given level is replaced by the two-part phrase tato (and tato only) to make the next level. Here is a short table:
