Demonstrating the recurring nature of narratives: the schema as an inner structure
In one session, Arturo described how a work colleague had insulted him by telling him that something he had written sounded like it came from a stupid child. Unlike in the past, Arturo did not react violently and instead he tried to ask for an explanation in the hope of correcting the sentence. The colleague continued to deride him and when Arturo calmly insisted for an explanation a second time, the colleague ordered him to be quiet and threatened to hit him. Arturo felt strong and capable, and he replied that if confronted, he would accept the challenge. The colleague gradually became frightened and submissive. Arturo had no intention of arriving at physical blows; rather his goal was to explain himself and correct his mistake. The therapist validated Arturo’s self-control and his ability to not dwell on his angry state. She then asked him what memories he could recall of being in similar situations in which he felt humiliated due to having written something poorly, as well as how he felt when he was not given the option of making a correction. He immediately thought of his father deriding him and imposing his own social success values on him while the patient was in the process of choosing a university course. After his recollection, Arturo realised that his reactiveness to criticism did not depend solely on current reality, i.e. the insult received, but also on the fact that historically he had never felt listened to or supported. This lack of support significantly affected him, to the extent that he stopped pursuing the goals that meant the most to him.
